Notes

Indications for Brain MRI: When Is a Brain MRI Scan Recommended?

Brain MRI is considered an advanced diagnostic imaging tool and is especially recommended in the following cases:

  • Individuals experiencing unexplained or persistent symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, numbness, or hearing loss.
  • Patients with a history of neurological conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, or previous traumatic brain injury, who require ongoing monitoring.
  • Cases with suspected brain-related disorders, including sudden or progressive memory decline, rapid vision loss, hydrocephalus, encephalitis, or intracranial hemorrhage.
  • Healthy individuals seeking general health check-ups and early screening for potential underlying brain conditions.

Brain MRI Procedure at Thien Nhan Hospital

To ensure a fast, safe, and accurate brain MRI examination, patients will be guided through the following steps:

Step 1: Initial Consultation and Clinical Assessment

Patients complete a medical consultation form and discuss all relevant clinical information with a specialist physician. During this step, the doctor will explain the brain MRI technique, review any contraindications (if applicable), and determine the most appropriate MRI indication. This is a critical step to ensure maximum safety before proceeding with the scan.

Step 2: Brain MRI Examination

After completing the preparation, patients are guided to the MRI suite to undergo the brain MRI scan as follows:

  • Patients are required to remove all metal objects (jewelry, watches, hearing aids, etc.) and lie on the MRI table.
  • Depending on the physician’s indication, patients may receive a contrast agent injection, which helps enhance blood vessels or abnormal lesions, improving diagnostic accuracy.
  • The MRI table moves into the scanner bore. The technologist will acquire brain images, with each image sequence taking a few minutes. Patients can communicate with the technologist via an intercom system inside the scanner.
  • The entire brain MRI procedure typically lasts 30–60 minutes. After the scan is completed, the technologist assists the patient off the table. If sedation is used, the patient will be transferred to a recovery area.

Step 3: Specialist Consultation and Results Interpretation

Once the images are processed, Thien Nhan Hospital’s experienced radiologists carefully review and analyze the MRI results. Based on the findings, the physician will provide medical advice and recommendations to support the patient’s health. If abnormalities are detected, Thien Nhan Hospital will arrange multidisciplinary consultations with leading experts or connect patients with tertiary hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.

Important Notes Before, During, and After Brain MRI

To ensure that the brain MRI procedure is performed smoothly, safely, and provides the most accurate results, please note the following:

Before Brain MRI Scan

  • Patients are required to remove all metal objects (glasses, jewelry, watches, braces, metal implants) and do not bring electronic devices or magnetic cards into the MRI room.
  • If patients have had any prior medical procedures with implanted materials (vascular stents, aneurysm clips, or embolization coils), please inform the doctor and MRI technician immediately to assess MRI safety.
  • If contrast injection is required, please fast for 4–6 hours before the MRI scan. Please consult your doctor for specific instructions tailored to your individual condition to receive detailed guidance and ensure accurate results.
  • Patients must inform the doctor or MRI technician immediately if they are pregnant, have any serious medical conditions (especially severe kidney disease), or have a history of allergies or reactions to contrast agents.
  • In cases where a contrast agent injection is indicated, patients with severe kidney disease are required to undergo kidney function testing beforehand to ensure the body can safely eliminate the contrast agent.

During Brain MRI scan

  • Patients should remain still, keeping the head and body immobile throughout the scan to ensure clear, high-quality images.
  • Use the provided earplugs, earmuffs, or music headphones to reduce noise exposure from the MRI scanner.
  • Please strictly follow the MRI technician’s instructions to ensure a safe, efficient procedure and accurate results.

After Brain MRI scan

  • If sedatives are used, please arrange for a companion to take you home. For the next 24 hours, do not drive, engage in strenuous activities, or consume alcohol.
  • Patients should closely monitor for any possible reactions to the contrast agent (if administered). If you notice any unusual symptoms such as rash, headache, or persistent dizziness, please contact Thien Nhan Hospital immediately for timely assistance.
  • If a contrast agent is administered, drink more water than usual for several hours after the scan to help the body eliminate the contrast agent more quickly and effectively.

FAQ

What Is a Brain MRI Scan?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is considered a highly safe diagnostic technique as it does not use ionizing radiation (X-rays). Instead, it operates using magnetic fields and radio waves, resulting in minimal side effects. Adverse reactions to contrast agents are also very rare. However, to ensure maximum safety and timely medical support, patients should inform their doctor if they have a history of allergies or kidney function issues.

What Conditions Can a Brain MRI Detect?

Brain MRI enables early detection of structural abnormalities in the brain, such as brain tumors, cerebral hemorrhage or infarction (stroke), aneurysms, and vascular malformations. It is also highly effective in diagnosing conditions related to epilepsy, encephalitis, dementia, hydrocephalus, traumatic brain injury, and many other chronic neurological disorders.

Is a Brain MRI Safe?

The answer is no—brain MRI is not harmful. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a safe diagnostic imaging technique. It is non-invasive and does not use X-rays or ionizing radiation, operating instead with magnetic fields and radio waves. Thanks to its high safety profile, brain MRI is well suited for both diagnostic purposes and routine health screening.

What Should Parents Know About Brain MRI for Children?

Brain MRI is completely safe for children, as it does not use X-rays, allowing parents to feel fully reassured. The most important requirement is that the child remains still throughout the scan to ensure high-quality images. At Thien Nhan Hospital, our experienced and child-friendly MRI technicians provide attentive support to help children stay calm and cooperative, ensuring a smooth, efficient, and effective scanning process.

Is a Brain MRI Scan Covered by Health Insurance?

Yes. The cost of a brain MRI is generally covered by health insurance. The specific coverage level depends on the terms and conditions of your insurance policy.
At Thien Nhan Hospital, we partner with more than 30 premium insurance providers, offering direct billing and fast-track insurance authorization to ensure a smooth and convenient experience for our patients. Learn more HERE!
